Abstract: I will survey the problem of constructing complete Calabi-Yau metrics on noncompact manifolds, and trace its history from the foundational work of Tian-Yau to some more recent developments. Some emphasis will be given to a concrete construction of a nontrivial Calabi-Yau metric on C^3 with maximal volume growth, which turns out to be also relevant in describing collapsing Calabi-Yau metrics.
